Release Your Inner Peacock

Thoughts on a Poem/Haiku”

Rowing with one oar

I lost that oar

For the first time I looked round

at the wide stretch of water.

Ko Un

Such a beautiful and simple poem. I felt the experience, oh I have been there. We say to ourselves: I know what that feels like. And it’s amazing, we don’t sink, we find a way to see more clearly, to be more aware of all that is around us. If we could just let go of the struggle on our own, how much better would we be? Ask your self right now “Am I struggling?” or has everything been stripped away? Do I have the courage to just look at everything around me, to see the beauty in where I am right at this moment. To take a few minutes to be completely aware.

Write out what you are feeling, what your dreams are, what is unbelievably beautiful on the inside. Think on how colorful your inner creative self is and let it out.

Living on an Island, I can choose to be rowing with one oar, missing things that are not here, feeling isolated or I can stop and let go of the oar and just be. Float with the tide. Let things come to me and create from what comes. Letting go becomes an art form.

I found this video and it was very inspirational as well as the haiku you posted. There is just so much out there to be discovered and to appreciate in this universe. We often get caught up in our lives and forget to notice the life of the world around us. It is important to our well being to pause and notice the “beauty of the living thing”. I often find myself forgetting to live, but it is through poetry, song and nature that I am reminded how precious everyday truly is. I hope to find these reminders throughout my life to keep me enjoying every moment to the fullest. We all need to learn to be the driving force of our existance and take action to acheive greatness.

Dr. Coffin, this was a wonderful post….

I am one of your students who has continued to row with 1 oar and forgotten to take some time to explore my surroundings.

In my little box, all I could see was how nice the outside world (out of Dominica) was compared to where I currently am. Your post has helped remind me that if I were to look from the outside-in, there are some very beautiful changes happening to me through the difficulties I face here.

Glad you enjoy Dominica so much. Optimism is a wonderful thing, and you have shared some with me.
